Long-weekend planner 2027: how many leave days for how many days off

Bridging (拼假) means joining public holidays and weekends with a few days of annual leave to get a longer break. The table below is calculated from this site's Hong Kong public holiday data: how long each holiday's natural break is, and the longest break 1 to 4 leave days can buy. Only combinations where each leave day buys at least two and a half days off are listed; simply adding leave after a long weekend is left out.

The standout for 2027 is Easter into Ching Ming: Good Friday (26 March) to Easter Monday (29 March) is already four days, and taking 30 March to 2 April as leave (4 days) joins the Ching Ming weekend of 3–5 April for 11 days in a row. Lunar New Year's Day (6 February) is a Saturday and the second day a Sunday, so the third and fourth days (8 and 9 February) are the holidays; three leave days (10–12 February) give 9 days off. October has two Friday holidays, National Day (1 October) and Chung Yeung (8 October), so four leave days in between give 10 days. Note that Labour Day (1 May) falls on a Saturday, and Christmas Day (25 December) is also a Saturday with the first weekday after Christmas on Monday 27 December, so Christmas is only three days.

Rules to know before you plan

The table assumes a five-day week: Saturdays, Sundays and every public (general/bank) holiday are days off. If you work Saturdays, or your employer gives only the statutory (labour) holidays rather than all public holidays, you will need more leave days — the holiday table above marks which days are statutory.

When a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the next day that is not itself a public holiday becomes the holiday; a holiday on a Saturday is not moved. When a statutory holiday falls on an employee's rest day, the employee should get a holiday on the next day that is not a statutory, alternative or substituted holiday or a rest day.

Under the Employment Ordinance, the employer decides when annual leave is taken after consulting the employee, and must give at least 14 days' written notice unless both sides agree otherwise — so ask early if you want to bridge. To check how many days you are entitled to, use theannual leave calculator. Source: Labour Department,A Concise Guide to the Employment Ordinance

Long-weekend FAQ

Which holiday is best for bridging in 2027?

Good Friday; The day following Good Friday; Easter Monday: take 4 days of leave (30 Mar, 31 Mar, 1 Apr, 2 Apr) for 11 days off, Fri 26 Mar – Mon 5 Apr

How many leave days does bridging usually take?

It depends on the weekday. A holiday on a Tuesday or Thursday usually needs one leave day for four days off; when only a few working days separate two long weekends (Easter and Ching Ming, for example), three or four leave days often buy nine days or more. The table on this page lists every holiday.

Can my employer refuse my leave dates?

Yes. Under the Employment Ordinance the employer decides when annual leave is taken after consulting the employee, and must give at least 14 days' written notice unless both sides agree otherwise. Apply early.

Is there a replacement day when a holiday falls on a weekend?

A public holiday on a Sunday moves to the next day; one on a Saturday does not move. A statutory holiday on an employee's rest day is replaced by a holiday on the next day that is not another holiday or a rest day.
